Where the name comes from
Thailand means “land of the Thai”; the origin of Thai is uncertain, and the popular link to “free” is debated.
First people
Ban Chiang villagers worked bronze here thousands of years ago, and Tai-speaking communities later mixed with Mon and Khmer societies; kingdoms such as Sukhothai arose in the 1200s.1,2
Known for
Thailand is known for its food, from pad thai to green curry, its Buddhist temples and Muay Thai boxing.3
Outside rule
Known abroad as Siam, it kept its independence while European powers colonized most of Southeast Asia, using diplomacy and reforms to handle British and French pressure.4,5
The modern country
A 1932 revolution ended absolute monarchy, and the name Thailand was introduced in 1939 and restored in 1949.6
