Where the name comes from
Liberia comes from Latin liber, “free”, recalling its founding as a settlement for formerly enslaved African Americans.
First people
Kru, Kpelle, Bassa and other Indigenous peoples lived here before the 1800s.1
Known for
Liberia is Africa’s oldest republic and flies a flag modelled on the US flag.2
Outside rule
The first settlers arrived in 1822, sponsored by the private American Colonization Society; Liberia was never a US colony, but settlers and their descendants kept many Indigenous communities from power for generations.3
The modern country
Liberia declared independence in 1847.3
