Where the name comes from
Comoros comes from Arabic Jazā’ir al-Qamar, “islands of the moon”.
First people
Swahili-speaking island societies grew here, linking East Africa with Arab and Persian traders.1
Known for
The old towns of Comoros grew into city-states and sultanates with an island culture that joins Islamic traditions with inheritance passed down through women’s families.2
Outside rule
France took Mayotte in 1841, made the other islands protectorates in 1886 and annexed them in 1912.3
The modern country
Three islands declared independence in 1975, while Mayotte stayed French.1
