Where the name comes from
Hungary comes from Turkic On-Ogur, “ten arrows” or “ten tribes”, an old confederation name applied to Hungarians.
First people
Magyar groups settled the Carpathian Basin around 895, and Hungarian belongs to the Uralic language family with Finnish and Estonian, not to its neighbours’ language families.1,2
Known for
Hungary is known for paprika and goulash and for the thermal baths of Budapest, which sits on more than a hundred hot springs.3
Outside contact
The Ottoman capture of Buda in 1541 split Hungary between Ottoman and Habsburg rulers.1
The modern country
The Christian kingdom founded around 1000 later joined the Austro-Hungarian compromise of 1867, and full independence came in 1918.1
